Back to Introduce Yourself forum
Hi, i'm a German teacher in the U.S. and a former computer programmer. Back then, I used RPG on IBM midranges and later VisualBasic, which I really enjoyed. I also dabbled in a little Assembly language, COBOL, and have occasionally stolen some Javascript tricks for my own website.
Recently I found myself missing programming, so I looked into what languages seem the best to learn for the future of programming. The consensus seemed to be Javascript and Python. Javascript is clearly a disorganized mess, so I opted to start learning Python. That's why I'm here. I am thoroughly enjoying it!
I am grateful for this site, and to those who share their code here. That's what helped me finally figure out how to use the standard input for the problems, instead of copying, pasting, and painstakingly adding all those commas, parentheses and brackets :P
Funny story: When I entered my user name during the registration process, autocorrect changed it into the German word "randaliert", which suggests that I like to riot or go on a rampage. I didn't notice it until my account had already been created.
Hallo! Meine Seite auf Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/vadim.tukaev
Herzlich willkommen!
Sehr wunderbar! :)
I'm sorry for my knowledge of German is limited to few phrases from song (and part of them in Yiddish rather than German).
Thank you very much for relating your story - such feedback is usually invaluable for me, e.g.
> finally figure out how to use the standard input for the problems, instead of copying
I've tried to make several notes on this in the first problems, and demo probably should show this - but still I feel this point is not clear enough for many new users and I feel pain when I see how they rewrite all these brackets, commas etc :o
> I used RPG
Wow, I think I never heard of it - and I really love all these things around well - now we call it computer history? :)
> When I entered my user name during the registration process
Ah, sorry for this! I hope I will implement feature to allow changing of names for people registered with login/password. Optionally you may ask to change your login style to FB or GitHub or Gmail - for them name changing is available right now...
Thanks for your reply! RPG stood for Report Program Generator; it was mostly used for generating various kinds of business reports, though I hacked some entertaining visual effects from it, too :)
The user name is no problem at all. I actually think it's funny, because I'm really rather mild-mannered.
The next thing I need to figure out is how to use functions on the site, instead of putting all my code in the main routine.
