This is an optimisation problem with a difference.
Rodion, the relevant files are in your e-mail.
There should, of course, be an apostrophe in Dobbin's !
Clive:
Thanks for this problem!
Would you mind taking a look at the case of 7.872 5.563 6.045 10.644
? My solution and your checker seem to disagree about this single case (I can arrange the journey to take 14013, if this helps).
I obviously suspected my solution first, but given that it belongs to the same, um, family (trying to be vague here) that is solved correctly in every other case, I would like to make sure there are no issues elsewhere.
Does the checker produce 14358? Idle away. :)
I think I detect a hint in the above. Thanks. :)
Vladimir, Many thanks for alerting me to a possible problem. When I saw that Mathias had solved the problem yesterday I took this to be confirmation that everything was working properly. Consequently I have not re-visited the site until now.
I'm sorry to have missed your report but am grateful to Mathias for spotting it and providing a carefully considered reply.
When I designed the problem I realised that there was the potential to make an unjustified (and incorrect) assumption. The sets of test data are generated randomly but I have ensured that at least one set of test data will address this particular issue. This explains why you could have one test fail among 6 others that are correct.
When I do make a mistake (which is bound to happen) I am really grateful to know that I am likely to get some rapid feedback to that effect.
Many thanks to you both and Happy New year.
Thanks, Clive (and Mathias); I've got it shortly after the exchange above.
